Get Out Get Active are delighted to be taking part in ‘Cycle Against Suicide’ spin-off event on the 23rd of June 2018.
We will be holding a family event for disabled users and non-disabled kids/adults to lead the peloton over the Peace Bridge to the Guildhall square to be welcomed by the Derry City and Strabane District Council Lord Mayor. This event is open to all of the family; young and old.
We will be meeting over 250 cyclists at Ebrigton Square at 3 o’clock but could all participants taking part in the Cycle Against Suicide Family Event to arrive at Foyle Arena between 1:15pm and 2:15pm to register for this free event hosted in association with Cycling Ireland, Disability Sport NI & Live Active NI.
We will be leaving Foyle Arena sharply at 2:30 pm to welcome the peloton at 3’o’clock. Wheelchair users including power chairs are welcome to attend this truly inclusive family event.
We have a limited number of inclusive bikes available for users. If you own an inclusive bike please bring it along with you. All bike users must have a bike in good working order and wear a suitable helmet. We have 4 tandem bikes available for people with sight loss and can provide some pilots if required.
Please let us know in advance if you would like to use one of our inclusive bikes and any specific requirements so that we can provide some training before you take part. You will have to come to Foyle Arena and try out the bike to ensure that it is suitable for your needs.
Our family event is designed for all of the family; we will do some fun bike handling skills before we leave.
The cycling route is flat and safe and suitable for everyone. It is used regularly during our Bike Fit Family sessions in all weather conditions. We will leave Foyle Arena and use the greenway to make our way to the start line. We will have marshals in place and the cycle will be led by experienced cycling instructors/marshals.
If you don’t feel you can cycle and watch your child, it is perfectly fine for you to walk alongside them. Balance bikes are also allowed.
Once you and your family have been greeted by the Lord Mayor you will be presented with a medal and invited to attend a reception held by the Lord Mayor In the Guildhall.
Afterwards, if you need assistance returning to Foyle Arena please inform Kieran who will be organising a group of the marshals to help return a small group of participants back to the start line.
Come and join us on the 23rd June for a truly inclusive free family cycling event.
Feel free to get in touch with Kieran between 9 am - 5 pm weekly.
To register or enquire about using an inclusive bike please get in touch with Kieran Coyle, Active Recreation officer for Derry City and Strabane on Tel: 07799038327 or Email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
